Lake Kachera is a shallow Lake found in the mid-western part of Uganda, in the Mbarara District. It is one of the little-known water bodies in the country sitting at the Latitude and Longitude of -0.551944 and 31.094444. Known for its rich fish and bird species, Lake Kachera is one of the unmissable places for travelers exploring Lake Mburo National Park in western Uganda.
This lake, together with Lake Mburo is part of the complex system of lakes that are referred to as the “Koki Lakes” and they form part of the Victoria satellite lakes. One thing about Koki Lakes is the fact that they are separated by vast swamps. They stand out for their high diversity of fish species that include the rare Singida Tilapia or Graham’s Tilapia. These are endemic to the Lake Victoria basin and its satellite lakes, that are surprisingly absent in other lakes like Kyoga and Victoria.

Lake Mburo National Park is one of the 10 national parks in Uganda, that drive the country’s tourism sector, but it is the smallest of all the savannah parks in the country. Surprisingly, over 70 species of mammals call Lake Mburo National Park home. The commonly spotted animals are hippos, cape buffaloes, topis, impalas, Burchell’s zebras, bushbucks, Defassa waterbucks, Rothschild giraffes, Olive baboons, giant elands, and the rarely spotted Leopards and spotted hyenas.
With over 350 bird species, Lake Mburo National Park is an unmissable birding spot. There are rich sights of African fish eagles, Abyssinian ground hornbills, Pelicans, Grey-crowned cranes, shoebill storks, Narina Trogon, Ross Turaco, and so much more.
Besides Lake Kachera, other Lakes in the area of western Uganda are Lake Mburo, Lake Kibigwa, Lake Kigambira, and Lake Nakivali among others.
